Dry Mouth: What You Need To Know

 In News

Have you experienced dry mouth? Most people have experienced dry mouth at some point in their lifetime, and it is often temporary due to dehydration or breathing dry air. However, some people have a chronic dry mouth, wherein they have a drier mouth on a regular basis.

Dry mouth or also known as Xerostomia happens when there is a decreased production of saliva in the mouth. It can be a temporary or chronic condition caused by various factors. Not drinking enough water, medications, stress, age, hormonal changes, sports, intensive exercise, alcohol and medical conditions are some of the causes of dry mouth.

Dry mouth can cause serious oral problems if left untreated. Decreased saliva production dramatically affects oral health. Saliva is one of the primary defense of the mouth against bacteria and acid erosion. It helps flush away food debris and prevent accumulation of bacteria. Therefore, if you’re suffering from dry mouth, you are at a higher risk of developing other dental problems. Dental staining, periodontal disease, Enamel erosion and tooth cavities are some of the dental issues brought by having dry mouth.

If you want to prevent having dental problems due to dry mouth, here are some useful tips that you can follow to maintain optimum oral health:

  • Daily oral hygiene. Brush and floss teeth, and clean your tongue.
  • Use high fluoride mouth rinse and toothpaste to prevent dry mouth.
  • Avoid alcohol, sweet food, caffeinated drinks, and cigarettes.
  • Chew sugar-free candy to stimulate saliva production.
  • Drink at least eight glass of water a day.
  • Visit a dentist regularly.
